Youth Discovered Deceased Following False Accusations of Taking Ashes
One teenage boy was discovered deceased just days following being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Tragic Finding
The young boy's mother and father found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his mother got a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The communication stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a statement presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, asserting her infant's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was not stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the alleged stolen ashes generated online comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Impact
She added that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in touch, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the family by the moment of his death.
Isolation and Anxiety
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could use the toilet anytime he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the allegations.
The inquest heard that a young adult urged Kai to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Response
The inquest heard from educational personnel at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang Kai's parents' telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The court learned his parents said they never got that message.
Official Conclusion
Lead coroner told the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was released whilst investigations proceeded."
The official concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or failures of any agency led to or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to discern his purpose."
