Major Internet Outage Affects Many Websites and Mobile Apps

A widespread web failure has impacted dozens sites and applications around the world, with users noting problems accessing the internet after problems at the web hosting system.

The disrupted services include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-operated operations such as its main retail website and the Ring home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected as well as its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of difficulties accessing the HMRC site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring customers took to online platforms to report their security devices were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of disruptions on specific applications totaled the thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the problem originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at the cloud division, a section that provides vital internet framework for many firms, who utilize space on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting platform.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “elevated failure rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the eastern US of the US. The ripple effect seemed to disrupt services worldwide, with the outage tracking website reporting problems with the corresponding services in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on online failures, additionally noted a rise in problems on that morning, including several cases found in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the outage originated.
